While using Rosetta Stone, you may need to reinstall the Student Management System (SMS). Examples of when to reinstall: 1) To upgrade your SMS to the latest version or 2) To move SMS to a new computer.
If you would like to reinstall SMS while keeping your current SMS Database intact (to preserve your Instructor and Student records), please follow these instructions:
Step 1: Backup your SMS Database
- Create the backup:
- Log in to the SMS Administrator
- In the SMS Administrator, click File and then click Create Database Backup
- In the dialog box that appears, click Yes to create the backup
- In the next dialog box, click OK to confirm that the backup was created
- Copy the backup:
- On the hard drive of the computer where the SMS Server is installed, locate the database_backup folder
- Windows users will find this at C:/Program Files/Rosetta Stone/SMS/smsdata/database_backup
- Mac users will find this at /Applications/SMS/smsdata/database_backup
- Inside the "database_backup" folder will be another folder named after the date and time the backup was created
- Identify the most recently created backup, and copy that folder to a safe location
- If you will be reinstalling SMS on this computer, copy the folder to your desktop
- If you will be installing SMS on a new computer, copy the folder to a portable storage device (i.e. CD, floppy disk or USB drive)
Step 2: Uninstall SMS
- Stop your SMS Server or Service
- SMS version 2.1.4 and earlier, stop the service from the open server window.
- SMS version 3.0 and later, Click Here
- Uninstall SMS
- Windows users, use the Uninstaller that is on your Start Menu at All Programs > Rosetta Stone > Student Management System > Uninstall Student Management System
- Mac users, drag the SMS folder (/Applications/SMS/) to the trash
Step 3: Reinstall SMS
- For installation instructions, please refer to your SMS Manual
Step 4: Restore your SMS Database
- Make sure your SMS Server or Service is not running
- SMS version 2.1.4 and earlier, stop the service from the open server window.
- SMS version 3.0 and later, Click Here
- Locate the "smsdata" folder on your hard drive
- Windows users will find this at C:/Program Files/Rosetta Stone/SMS/smsdata/
- Mac users will find this at /Applications/SMS/smsdata/
- Replace the blank (default) database with the backup of your old database
- Copy the "database_backup" folder into the "smsdata" folder
- Rename the "database" folder (that is inside the "smsdata" folder) to something such as "database_original"
- Rename the "database_backup" folder to "database"
- Restart your SMS Server or Service
- SMS version 2.1.4 and earlier, start the service from the open server window.
