Rosetta Stone® Version 3 Freezes After I Select My Username

If you recently updated Rosetta Stone® Version 3 it is possible the update failed and corrupted a Rosetta Stone® file. In this article you will be walked through correcting the file.

If you are on Windows 2000 or XP, click here.
If you are on Windows Vista or 7, click here.
If you are on Windows 8 or 10, click here.



If you're using Windows Vista or Windows 7, please follow the instructions below:

First we will back up a file called products.xml.

  1. Click Windows Start and in the search type: %programdata%

  2. Press Enter .

  3. This will open a new window with folders. Double-click on the folder Rosetta Stone .

  4. Right-click on the file products , and left click on Copy .

  5. Right-click in the folder , and click on Paste . This will create a products-copy .

Next we will remove the corrupt entry.

  1. Right-click on products , navigate over Open With… and select Wordpad .

  2. Scroll to the bottom of the document.

  3. Look for a line of text that starts <course id=”null”

  4. Highlight the <product> immediately above it, and everything through the following </product>

  5. Press Delete .

  6. Press the Close (red box with an “X”)  button and then press Save .

  7. Launch Rosetta Stone and select your username. If you still receive the same problem, then please contact us .

  8. If you are able to successfully load to the Homescreen then proceed to the next section.


If you're using Windows 8 or 10, please follow the instructions below:

First we will back-up a file called products.xml.

  1. Press the  Windows Key on your keyboard, and start typing: %programdata%, and press Enter. 

  2. This will open a new window with folders. Double-click on the folder Rosetta Stone and then double click on the Language Training folder.

  3. Right-click on the file products , and left click on Copy .

  4. Right-click in the folder , and click on Paste . This will create a products-copy.

Next we will remove the corrupt entry.

  1. Right-click on products , navigate over Open With… and select Wordpad.

  2. Scroll to the bottom of the document.

  3. Look for a line of text that starts <course id=”null”

If you're using Windows XP or Windows 2000, please follow the instructions below:

First we will back-up a file called products.xml.

  1. Click Windows Start , then My Computer .

  2. Double-click your (C:) drive (Also called Local disk (C:) or OS (C:)), Documents and Settings , and then All Users .

  3. Click Tools , then Folder Options .

  4. Click the View tab, and click Show Hidden Files and Folders , and then press OK .

  5. Double-click on the folders: Application Data , and Rosetta Stone .

  6. Right-click on products.xml and select Copy .

  7. Right-click in the folder and select paste . This will make a copy of products .

Next we will remove the corrupt entry.

  1. Right-click on the original product.xml file, navigate over Open with… and select Wordpad .

  2. Scroll to the bottom of the document.

  3. Look for a line of text that starts with <course id=”null”

  4. Highlight the <product> immediately above it, and everything through the following </product>

  5. Press Backspace on your keyboard.

  6. Press the Close (red box with an “X”) button and then press Save .

  7. Launch Rosetta Stone and select your username. If you still receive the same problem, then please contact us .

  8. If you are able to successfully load to the Homescreen then proceed to the next section.
