How can I resolve Error 1124?

Fatal Application Error 1124.

This error can occur when you open the Rosetta Stone® Language Learning application. When this occurs, the only option you will receive is to exit the application. This error can occur if the speech engine has been corrupted.


If you are using Windows Vista or 7, please click here.

If you are using Mac OS X, please click here.

If you are using Windows Vista or 7 please follow the steps below:

  • Click on the Start Menu and open the Control Panel.

  • Under Programs click on Uninstall a program.

  • Select the entry for Rosetta Stone Ltd Services and click Uninstall at the top of the list.
  • Now reinstall Rosetta Stone from your CD or download link.
  • If the 1124 error is still present after reinstalling the application please continue to the steps below.
  • Click on the Start Menu.
  • Click All Programs, then Accessories.

  • Right click on Wordpad, and then left click on Run as Administrator.

  • Go to File and then Open.
  • Open Computer.
  • Open C: (often called Local Disk (C:) or OS (C:))

  • Open the folders Windows, System32, drivers, and then etc.
  • Using the drop-down in the lower-right select All Documents.

  • Select the file "hosts" and click Open.
  • Please make sure that their is an entry which reads 127.0.0.1     localhost , If there is not please add it by typing " 127.0.0.1 (press the tab key) localhost " so that it appears exactly as below.

  • Go to File and click Save. Close Wordpad.
  • Try running Rosetta Stone once more.

  • Press the Windows Key on your keyboard, and start typing Control Panel and then press Enter.
  • Under Programs click on Uninstall a program.

  • Select the entry for Rosetta Stone Ltd Services and click Uninstall at the top of the list.
  • Now reinstall Rosetta Stone from your CD or download link.
  • If the 1124 error is still present after reinstalling the application please continue to the steps below.
  • Press the Windows Key on your keyboard, and start typing WordPad. As the WordPad shows up in your search, right click on the application WordPad and select Run as administrator.
  • From WordPad Go to File and then Open.
  • Open Computer.

  • Click on the Finder icon.

  • From the menu bar click Go and then Applications.

  • Drag the Rosetta Stone application to the Trash.
  • Now reinstall Rosetta Stone from your CD or download link.
  • If the 1124 error is still present after reinstalling the application please continue to the steps below.
  • Click the Finder icon on your dock.
  • Click Go from the menu bar, then Go to Folder …

  • Type /etc and click Go.

  • Drag the hosts file to your desktop.

  • Ctrl + click on the hosts file on your desktop, then select Open With > TextEdit.

  • You may be missing the "127.0.0.1 localhost" line. If you don't see this line, re-add it by typing: 127.0.0.1 (Press Tab on your keyboard) localhost so it appears exactly as it does below.

  • Click the red dot in the upper left to close the window and click Save.
  • Drag the hosts file back into the etc folder. You will receive the message "The item 'hosts' could not be moved because 'etc' cannot be modified." Click Authenticate.
