Error 8111 or 8112

Error 8111 and 8112 indicates Rosetta Stone® was unable to access its activation files. The error can be caused for the following reasons:

  • Insufficient privileges to run Rosetta Stone.
  • The activation service is disabled.
  • The activation service needs to be updated.

Here's how to fix it:

If you are using Windows XP, please click here

If you are using Windows Vista, 7, 8, or 10 please click here

On Windows Vista, 7, 8, or 10

First, ensure the activation service is not disabled:

  1. Click Windows key and R key from your keyboard at the same time and let go.
  2. The Run command box will appear. Type in  services.msc and click OK .
  3. Locate Flexnet Licensing Service .  Right-click it and click Properties .
  4. Ensure Startup type: is Manual .
  5. Close the Services window.
  6. Launch Rosetta Stone again.
  7. Attempt to activate.
  8. If you received error 8112, then proceed to the next section.

Next, run the Rosetta Stone application as an Administrator:

  1. Press Windows Key on your keyboard, and then type Computer and press Enter.
  2. Double-click (C:) , Program Files (or Program Files(x86)), Rosetta Stone , and Rosetta Stone Language Training | Rosetta Stone Version 3 | Rosetta Stone TOTALe. ( folder names will vary depending on the version you have installed on your computer. )
  3. Right-click Rosetta Stone and click Run as Administrator .
  4. Attempt to activate.
  5. If you received error 8112, then proceed to the next section.  If you opened successfully, then move to step 6.
  6. Close Rosetta Stone.
  7. Launch Rosetta Stone.
  8. If no error appeared, then the issue is solved.  If you received error 8112, then press Windows Key on your keyboard, and then type Computer and press Enter
  9. Double-click (C:) drive , Program Files , Common Files , and then Macrovision Shared .
  10. Right-click Flexnet Publisher and click Delete .
  11. Close the folder window.
  12. Press Windows Key on your keyboard, and then type Computer and press Enter.
  13. Double-click (C:) drive , Program Files (or Program Files(x86)), Rosetta Stone,  and Rosetta Stone Language Training | Rosetta Stone Version 3 | Rosetta Stone TOTALe. ( folder names will vary depending on the version you have installed on your computer. )
  14. Right-click on Rosetta Stone icon  and click Run as Administrator .
  15. If you receive error 8112, then proceed to the next section.

Next, update your activation service:

  1. Click Windows key and R key from your keyboard at the same time and let go.
  2. The Run command box will appear. Type in  services.msc and click OK . .
  3. Locate Flexnet Licensing Service .  Right-click it and click Stop .  If Stop is grayed out, then it is already stopped.
  4. Close the Services window.
  5. Press Windows Key on your keyboard, and then type Computer and press Enter.
  6. Double-click (C:) drive , Program Files , Rosetta Stone , and Rosetta Stone Language Training | Rosetta Stone Version 3 | Rosetta Stone TOTALe. ( folder names will vary depending on the version you have installed on your computer. )
  7. Double-click the service_installer file.
  8. Close the folder window.
  9. Launch Rosetta Stone.
  10. Attempt to activate.

On Windows XP

First, ensure the activation service is not disabled:

  1. Press Windows Start button and click on Run.
  2. Type: services.msc and press Enter .
  3. Locate Flexnet Licensing Service .  Right-click it and click Properties .
  4. Change the Startup type to Manual if it is not already.
  5. Click OK .
  6. Close the services window.
  7. Launch Rosetta Stone.
  8. Attempt to activate.
  9. If you received error 8112 again, then proceed to the next section.

Next, update the activation service:

  1. Click Windows Start , and then Run .
  2. Type: services.msc and click OK .
  3. Locate Flexnet Licensing Service . Right-click it and click Stop . If Stop is grayed out, then it is already stopped.
  4. Close the Services window.
  5. Click Windows Start and then My Computer .
  6. Double-click (C:) drive , Program Files , Rosetta Stone , and then Rosetta Stone Version 3. Or double-click (C:) drive Program Files Rosetta Stone , and then Rosetta Stone TOTALe
  7. Double-click service_installer.exe.
  8. Close the folder window.
  9. Open Rosetta Stone by clicking Windows Start, All Programs, Rosetta Stone, Rosetta Stone Version 3, and then Rosetta Stone Version 3. Or click the Rosetta Stone TOTALe icon on your desktop.
