Error 8111 while activating Rosetta Stone® Language Learning

Error 8111 indicates Rosetta Stone® was unable to access its activation files.
The Error can be caused for the following reasons: 
  • Insufficient privileges to run Rosetta Stone.
  • The Activation service is disabled.
  • There are existing activation files causing the error. 

Here is how to fix it:

If you are using Windows XP, please click here

If you are using Windows Vista, 7, 8, or 10 please click here.

If you are using Mac OS X, please click here



On Windows Vista, 7, 8, or 10

First ensure the activation service is not disabled: 

  1. Click Windows Start button. For Windows 8 or 10, click on the Windows Key 3 on your keyboard and type services.msc, and press Enter. [ Skip to Step 3 ] 
  2. Right above the Start button, you will see a search box. Type in services.msc and press Enter
  3. Locate Flexnet Licensing Service. Right click on it and click on Properties
  4. Ensure Startup type is Manual
  5. If the service was disabled and you have changed it to Manual, then please launch Rosetta Stone and attempt to activate. 
If the error is still not resolved or if Flexnet Licensing Service was already set to manual, then please follow further troubleshooting steps.

Further troubleshooting for Windows Vista and 7 

First, we will stop the activation service:

  1. Click Windows Start , in the search type: services.msc and press Enter .
  2. Find the FLEXnet Licensing Service , right-click it and click Stop .  If Stop is grayed out, then it is already stopped.
  3. Find RosettaStoneDaemon service, right-click and click Stop .
  4. Minimize the Services window.

Delete the FLEXnet folder:

  1. Click Windows Start and in the Search box type %programdata% .
  2. Then double click the FLEXnet folder .
  3. Move any files that start with adobe to the desktop. Leave any files that start with RS or rosetta.
  4. Click the back button.
  5. Right-click on the FLEXnet folder, and click Delete.
  6. Minimize the folder window.
  7. Click Services from your taskbar to restore it.
  8. Right-click RosettaStoneDaemon and click Start .
Open Rosetta Stone and attempt to activate :
  1. Double-click the Rosetta Stone icon on your desktop to open the program.
  2. If you're not brought to Product Activation, then click Settings, or gear icon Gear and then Activate Products.
  3. Enter your Activation ID, and click Activate.
  4. Once you’ve been notified your product has been activated, then click Continue .
  5. Close Rosetta Stone.

If you moved adobe files to your desktop, then you should move them back:

  1. Highlight the adobe files on your desktop, right-click and click Cut .
  2. Click the ProgramData folder on your taskbar to restore it.
  3. Double-click the FLEXnet folder.
  4. Right-click and click Paste .  The adobe files should appear.
  5. Close the folder window.

Further troubleshooting for Windows 8 or 10

First, we will stop the activation service:

  1. Press the Windows Key 3 on your keyboard , then type: services.msc and press Enter .
  2. Find the FLEXnet Licensing Service , right-click it and click Stop .  If Stop is grayed out, then it is already stopped.
  3. Find RosettaStoneDaemon service, right-click and click Stop .
  4. Minimize the Services window.

Delete the FLEXnet folder:

  1. Press the Windows Key 3 on your keyboard and type %programdata% and press Enter.
  2. Then double click the FLEXnet folder .
  3. Move any files that start with adobe to the desktop. Leave any files that start with RS or rosetta.
  4. Click the back button.
  5. Right-click on the FLEXnet folder, and click Delete.
  6. Minimize the folder window.
  7. Click Services from your taskbar to restore it.
  8. Right-click RosettaStoneDaemon and click Start .
Open Rosetta Stone and attempt to activate :
  1. Double-click the Rosetta Stone icon on your desktop to open the program.
  2. If you're not brought to Product Activation, then click Settings  or gear icon Gear , and then Activate Products.
  3. Enter your Activation ID, and click Activate.
  4. Once you’ve been notified your product has been activated, then click Continue .
  5. Close Rosetta Stone.

If you moved adobe files to your desktop, then you should move them back: 

  1. Highlight the adobe files on your desktop, right-click and click Cut .
  2. Click the ProgramData folder on your taskbar to restore it.
  3. Double-click the FLEXnet folder.
  4. Right-click and click Paste .  The adobe files should appear.
  5. Close the folder window.

On Mac OS X

First, remove the activation files:

  1. Click the Finder icon on your dock.
  2. From the top menu bar, click Go and then Computer .
  3. Click Macintosh HD , Library , Application Support , FLEXnet Publisher and then Services .
  4. Move any folders that are not 11.04.010, 11.4.100, or 11.7 to the desktop.
  5. Click the Back button twice .
  6. Control + click on the FLEXnet Publisher folder and click Move to Trash .
  7. Enter the password for your Mac.
  8. Click the Back button.
  9. Click the Preferences folder, FLEXnet Publisher and then FLEXnet .
  10. Drag any files that start with adobe to your desktop.
  11. Click the Back button twice.
  12. Control + click on the FLEXnet Publisher folder and click Move to Trash .
Next, re-install the Rosetta Stone application:
  1. From the menu bar click Go and then Applications .
  2. Control + click the Rosetta Stone icon and click Move to Trash .
  3. Download and install the latest version of Rosetta Stone for your operating system by clicking here.
Open Rosetta Stone and activate:
  1. Click the Finder icon from your Dock at the bottom of your screen. 

If you moved adobe files to your desktop, then you should move them back:

  • From the menu bar click Go and then Applications .
  • Double-click Rosetta Stone icon to launch it.
  • If you're not brought to Product Activation, then click Preferences or Gear Icon Gear  , and then Activate Products .
  • Enter your Activation ID, and click Activate .
  • Once you’ve been notified your product has been activated, then click Continue .
  • Close Rosetta Stone.
    1. From the menu-bar click Go and then Computer .
    2. Click Mac HD , Library , Application Support , FLEXnet Publisher and then Services .
    3. Drag any 11.X.XX folders from your desktop into the folder.
    4. Click the Back button three times.
    5. Click Preferences , FLEXnet Publisher , and then FLEXnet .
    6. Drag any adobe files into this folder.

On Windows XP

First ensure the activation service is not disabled.  

  1. Click Windows Start, and then Run
  2. Type: services.msc and click Ok
  3. Locate Flexnet Licensing Service. Right click on it and click Properties
  4. Change the Startup type to Manual if it is disabled. 
  5. If the service was disabled and you have changed it to Manual, then please launch Rosetta Stone and attempt to activate. 
If the error is still not resolved or if Flexnet Licensing Service was already set to manual, then please follow further troubleshooting steps.

  1. Click Windows Start , and then Run .

  4. Click the back button.
  5. Right-click on the FLEXnet folder, and click Delete .
  6. Minimize the folder window.
  7. On your taskbar click Services to restore the window.
  8. Right-click on RosettaStoneDaemon and click Start .
Open Rosetta Stone and attempt to activate :
  1. Launch Rosetta Stone by double-clicking Rosetta Stone TOTALe on your desktop.
  2. If you're not brought to Product Activation, then click Preferences, and then Activate Products.
  3. Enter your Activation ID, and click Activate .
  4. Once you’ve been notified your product has been activated, and then click Continue .
  5. Close Rosetta Stone.

If you moved adobe files to your desktop, then you should move them back:

  1. Highlight the adobe files on your desktop, right-click and click Cut .
  2. Click the Application Data folder on your taskbar to restore it.
  3. Double-click the FLEXnet folder.
  4. Right-click and click Paste .  The adobe files should appear.
  5. Close the folder window.
