All About Live Tutoring

All About Live Tutoring

Live Tutoring is a live, online environment where a Tutor guides you and up to three other learners through activities that inspire conversation and reinforce your new language skills. Your Tutor, a native speaker of the language you’re learning, is there to guide you, provide encouragement, help you with pronunciation and grammar, and ultimately enable you to speak with confidence.

Each unit in Language Training has two corresponding Live Tutoring sessions; so, once you’ve completed Level 1, Unit 1, Core Lesson 2, you’re ready for your first 25-minute session.  You can also repeat Live Tutoring sessions that you have taken at any time:  however, make sure you’ve completed the relevant core lessons within the unit before your scheduled session.  You can schedule up to two Live Tutoring sessions at one time (The amount of sessions available to an individual could vary based upon which product they are currently subscribed to), so long as the Live Tutoring sessions are not identical. For example, you can not be registered for two Level 1, Unit 1, Lesson 2 Live Tutoring sessions, but you can be registered for a Level 1, Unit 1, Lesson 2 and a Level 1, Unit 1, Lesson 4 Live Tutoring session.

How do I schedule a Live Tutoring session?

You'll be prepared to attend a Live Tutoring session after every second and fourth core lesson in every unit of Language Training. It's a great idea to schedule your session ahead of time since you'll have a better selection of Live Tutoring session times.

First, you will want to get to the Live Tutoring scheduling screen, which you can access in one of two ways:

1. Hover over the Live Tutoring button on the toolbar and click “Schedule.”

From the Live Tutoring scheduling screen, filter for sessions that are best for you:

1. Choose your unit on the unit bar at the top of the screen.

2. Under "Find a Session", choose the radio button for Lesson 2 or Lesson 4.

3. Choose a date from which available sessions will start, and a day of the week that is convenient for you.

4. Scroll through the list of sessions on the right, and click “Schedule” on a session that suits your schedule best.

How can I get ready for my Live Tutoring session?

Here are some tips to prepare for your Live Tutoring session:
  • Sign-in 15 minutes early to make sure your system is connected to the Internet and that your USB headset is working properly.  If possible, use a wired connection rather than a wireless connection.  We require a minimum of 500 kpbs upload and download to enter in a Live Tutoring Session but we recommend 700 kpbs or higher for better performance. You can test your Internet speed by going to http://speedtest.trstone.com.
  • Make sure you have your USB headset plugged in, set up and correctly configured on your computer.
  • Find a quiet space that will allow you to focus on your session and sign out of all applications like Skype and AIM, which may interfere with your connection to Live Tutoring.
  • Review lessons of the relevant unit in Language Training.
  • Play games to review concepts in Games & Activities. You may want to focus on Talk activities so that you can practice speaking in your new language!
